You can address your income tax grievances through X by posting your complaint and tagging the official handle of the Income Tax Department, x.com/IncomeTaxIndia, which is actively monitored by the department’s media cell for public queries and grievances.

Tag Tour Query On The Income Tax X Handle

Tagging the Income Tax Department’s official X handle, such as @IncomeTaxIndia or @CBDT_India, can indeed help escalate unresolved tax grievances, particularly in high-impact cases like those involving the proposed 5% U.S. remittance tax affecting NRIs. “Publicly raising such issues on social media not only brings them to the immediate attention of authorities but also increases pressure for a prompt response, as these posts are visible to and concern a wider audience. The department’s social media teams actively monitor these platforms and often respond by offering guidance, such as directing users to file a formal complaint on the e-Nivaran portal or requesting further details via direct message,” says SR Patnaik, Partner (head - taxation), Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.

“Clearly describe your issue in the tweet without sharing sensitive personal information, and include relevant details like reference numbers or assessment years to help the authorities understand and act on your concern. The department’s media cell regularly responds to tweets as part of its online response management, and issues raised on this platform often receive prompt acknowledgment or guidance on further steps,” says Patnaik.

Be Precise And To The Point

One usually resorts to X when probably despite various attempts through official channels, your complaint or grievances have gone unheard/ unanswered. One should find out the official or the main X handle for the department or any other handle that may have been specifically made for public grievances.

Tag all possible handles, mention your problem, it should be crisp, concise, and to the point, since X has a word limit. “Do not divulge any personal information, since it’s a public forum and any personal information may be misused. You may be stern, but one must attempt to be polite/ professional to maintain decorum. You may use relevant hashtags to increase your visibility. Keep following up with subsequent tweets, use the photo feature to attract attention, and post screenshots,” says Ritika Nayyar, Partner, Singhania & Co.

When people post grievances on X, this being a public platform makes it available for the whole world to see. There is more awareness on which areas and departments are not resolving public issues, or if taxpayers are facing harassment. “It puts pressure on the authorities to address those concerns because such cases portray a bad image of them in the public eye. Almost all organisations now have a dedicated social media team that keeps track of all posts, publications, and news for their department. They are prompt to pick issues and get them addressed at the earliest for timely resolution and improving the performance and track record for the departments,” says Nayyar.

While X is not a replacement for formal grievance mechanisms, it serves as a rapid escalation platform, often prompting prompt acknowledgment or guidance from the department’s media cell, which actively monitors and responds to public queries as part of its online response management.
