Bitcoin Turns 18: How World’s First Cryptocurrency Has Evolved Since Its White Paper Release

As Bitcoin’s white paper turns 18 tomorrow, the cryptocurrency has evolved from a proposed peer-to-peer (P2P) payment system that bypasses banks and financial institutions into an asset held by individual investors, companies and institutions.

What Did Bitcoin’s White Paper Propose

The document titled as Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System was published under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. It proposed a way to send digital money directly between the two parties without involving a financial institution to verify payments.

The white paper also addressed the problem of double-spending, where a person could attempt to use the same digital money in two separate transactions. Nakamoto suggested using a P2P network and cryptographic proof instead of depending on a trusted third party.

Under the proposed system, digital signatures would help establish ownership of funds while transactions would be broadcast across the network. A timestamp server would record transactions by grouping them into a chain of proof-of-work. Nevertheless, Bitcoin’s use and role in the financial system have changed over the year with its evolution extending beyond the payment system described in the original white paper.

How Has Bitcoin Evolved Into An Investment Asset?

Bitcoin was introduced as a P2P payment system, but its presence in the financial markets has grown over the years. It remains the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation. Its price reached an all-time high of around $126,200 in October 2025 and was trading at $77,800 at the time of writing. Its market capitalisation is currently around $1.56 trillion.

Vikaas M. Sachdeva, CEO of BitDelta India, said: “Bitcoin has not become a different asset, but the ways in which people access, hold and trade it have evolved considerably.”

He pointed to the growth of investment products and institutional holdings. As on October 27, 2026, US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) held around 1.29 million Bitcoins, while public companies held approximately 1.30 million Bitcoins, including around 848,500 Bitcoins held by Strategy. Sachdeva added that Bitcoin is viewed by some investors as a limited digital asset that can form part of a wider investment portfolio.

Why Has Bitcoin’s Use For Payments Remained Limited?

While Bitcoin has gained a larger presence in investment markets, its use for everyday payments has not expanded at the same pace.

Vikas Gupta, country manager, India, Bybit, said: “Bitcoin’s adoption as an investment has progressed faster because its defining characteristics are more readily accessible through financial markets than through everyday commerce.”

He added that price volatility can make it difficult for merchants to manage the value of payments, particularly when converting Bitcoin into local currency. Transaction fees and confirmation times can also vary depending on network demand. Gupta said wider use in everyday payments would depend on predictable transaction costs, convenient settlement and greater acceptance among merchants.

How Is Bitcoin Adoption Changing In India?

Bitcoin investors in India are no longer limited to early adopters and technology enthusiasts. Rajagopal Menon, vice president, WazirX, said, “India’s crypto investor base has evolved from a relatively niche community of early adopters and technology enthusiasts into a broader group of retail participants.”

WazirX’s platform data shows that more than 82 per cent of its verified users over the last year were from non-metro cities. Investors aged 25-34 accounted for 50.80 per cent of its user base, while Gen Z made up 72 per cent of new investors on the platform.

Menon said regulatory clarity, taxation, and investor protection would play an important role in the future growth of India’s crypto market
