Notably trading activity has been halted on D-street on account of Mahavir Jayanti. Mahavir Jayanti is a festival which has immense significance for followers of Jainism as it commemorates Lord Mahavira’s birth. In Jain belief, Lord Mahavira is considered the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism.

Some states declare a public holiday on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. Since the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE are located in Maharashtra, they will also remain closed. As the exchanges will remain closed trades in equity derivatives, Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) and Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) will not take place on April 10. Notably Mahavir Jayanti is the first trading holiday in April so far.

Lord Mahavira is revered by followers of the Jain religion as a teacher and a key religious figure. Devotees of Lord Mahavira gather together to participate in spiritual processions at Jain temples across the globe.

Stock Market Holidays In April

Indian stock market investors are all set to experience another truncated week as the market is scheduled to remain open for only three days in the week starting April 14. According to the NSE calendar, no trading activity will take place on account of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti. Later in the week, trading activity will also be halted on the occasion of Good Friday on April 18. There will be no other officially designated stock market holidays apart from the ones mentioned above in April.

Regular Stock Market Timings

Normally the exchanges remain open for trade from Monday to Friday. Equity trades take place between 9:15 am and 3:30 pm, IST. However the market remains closed for trades on weekends and on officially designated holidays.

While regular trading activity starts after 9:15 am, a pre-open session is held between 09:00 a.m. and 9:08 a.m. Towards the end of the trading session, a separate closing session is held by the exchanges which begins around 03:40 p.m. and ends at 04:00 p.m. Apart from these timings, the exchanges also have two separate windows for conducting block deals.

The morning window for block deals operates between 08:45 a.m. and 09:00 a.m. On the other hand, the afternoon window operates between 02:05 p.m. and 2:20 p.m.
