Sensex, Nifty Close Lower By Nearly 1 Per Cent As Headline Indices Extend Losses For Second Straight Day

Stock Market News: The headline indices extended losses for the second session on April 25. The 30-share Sensex closed lower by 588.9 points or 0.74 per cent at 79,212.53. The Nifty index also ended lower by 207.35 points or 0.86 per cent at 24,039.35 levels.

Shriram Finance, Adani Enterprises Lead Losers

As many as 41 constituents of the Nifty 50 index declined and 9 of its constituents closed in the green. Shares of Shriram Finance, Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone and Trent Ltd closed lower by as much as 8.13 per cent, emerging as top drags among Nifty constituents. On the other hand, shares of SBI Life Insurance, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys closed higher by up to 5.15 per cent.

Nifty IT Bucks Trend

All major sectoral indices apart from the Nifty IT index closed in the red. The Nifty IT index closed higher by 0.72 per cent amid a broad-based decline in the stock market. Sectoral indices such as the Nifty Realty and Nifty Pharma index closed lower by as much as 2.8 per cent. Broader market indices such as the Nifty MidCap 100 and the Nifty SmallCap 100 closed lower by as much as 2.55 per cent. The India VIX index closed higher by 5.58 per cent indicating heightened volatility in upcoming days.

Global Markets

Wall Street indices such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed higher by as much as 2.74 per cent, while the Dow Jones Index ended lower by 0.39 per cent. European indices such as the FTSE 100, the CAC 40 and the DAX Performance index traded in the green by as much as 0.65 per cent at the time of writing. Asian indices such as the Hang Sent and the Nikkei 225 traded higher by up to 1.87 per cent. On the other hand, the Shanghai Composite traded in the red, down by 0.7 per cent.

Cues To Watch

Many major companies are announcing their results for the fourth and final quarter of FY 2024-25. Notably several companies will announce their earnings across the weekend. The announcement of results by these companies is expected to impact D-Street on April 28 as trading activity resumes after the weekend.
