The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), two of India’s premier stock exchanges, will remain closed on Thursday, October 2, 2025. This year, Dussehra and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti fall on the same day so that trading will be suspended for the entire day.

As per the 2025 stock market holiday schedule, October 2 has been officially designated a nationwide trading holiday. Investors should note that neither equity nor derivative transactions will be conducted on this day.

Stock Market Holidays In October 2025

According to the official trading holiday calendar released by the NSE and BSE, the stock market will remain closed on the following days in October 2025:

  • October 2, 2025 (Thursday): Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra

  • October 21, 2025 (Tuesday): Diwali Laxmi Pujan (Muhurat Trading Session)

  • October 22, 2025 (Wednesday): Diwali Balipratipada

Will MCX Remain Open On October 2?

No, the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also be closed on October 2, 2025, in observance of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra.

The commodity market has two main trading sessions – a morning session and an evening session. The morning session runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while the evening session continues from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM. However, during the US daylight saving period, the evening session is extended to 11:55 PM.

Trading hours also vary depending on the type of commodity. Regular agricultural commodities, internationally benchmarked agricultural products, and non-agricultural commodities each follow their own specific schedules, so traders need to keep these differences in mind when planning their trades.

According to the MCX website, apart from October 2, MCX will close its operations on October 21 for Diwali as well. On October 22, Diwali Balipratipada, MCX will be closed for the morning session. The evening session from 5:00 PM will function as usual.

Muhurat Trading On Diwali

Muhurat trading is a special one-hour trading session held on the auspicious day of Diwali (Lakshmi Pujan) to mark the beginning of the new Samvat year.

Stock exchanges NSE and BSE, and commodity exchange MCX will conduct Muhurat Trading on October 21. The exact timings for this session will be announced by the exchanges closer to the date.

Many investors take part in Muhurat trading to mark a fresh start and hope for a prosperous new year, according to Hindi calendar. During this time, trading activity usually picks up as people participate with enthusiasm.
