The Sensex dropped 244.98 points to 83,382.71, while the Nifty 50 fell 66.70 points, closing at 25,665.60 on January 14.
Market volatility was driven by US-India trade talk uncertainties and geopolitical tensions, despite earlier intraday highs led by energy and metals.
Nifty Metal gained 2.70 per cent, but losses in TCS, Asian Paints, and the IT sector pulled the overall market indices down.
