Share Market News: Headline indices finished the session in the red amid mounting geopolitical and economic tensions. The Sensex finished at 83,627.69, down by 250.48 points or 0.30 per cent, while the Nifty 50 closed around 25,732.30 level, down by 57.95 points or 0.22 per cent.

Before the session ended the 30-share Sensex gained 0.45 per cent to trade around the 84,258.03 levels and the Nifty 50 climbed 0.42 per cent to 25,899.8 levels. However, the indices pared the gains as the session ended as the market factored in the impact of the US President's latest 25 per cent tariff announcement. Notably, the US President has announced a 25 per cent tariff on countries which trade with Iran.

Trent, Larsen & Toubro and Dr Reddy’s Labs Lead Losers

Shares of Tata group company Trent, Larsen & Toubro led the losers among Nifty 50 stocks as they closed 3.71 per cent and 3.21 per cent lower on the NSE. Other Nifty losers included Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Interglobe Aviation and Reliance Industries, which finished lower by as much as 1.99 per cent. While 32 stocks from the Nifty 50 finished in the red, 18 stocks finished in the green.

Nifty IT and Nifty PSU Bank Gain

The Nifty IT and the Nifty PSU Bank indices ended the session higher by 0.62 per cent and 0.78 per cent, respectively, and emerged as top-gainers among sectoral indices. The gains seen in the Nifty IT index followed the announcement of Q3FY26 results by HCL Technologies and Tata Consultancy Services on January 12. On the other hand, the Nifty Realty and the Nifty Consumer Durables index emerged as the top drags among sectoral indices as they finished lower by 0.84 per cent and 0.64 per cent, respectively. Broader market indices finished the session mixed with the Nifty SmallCap 100 closing higher by 0.57 per cent while the Nifty MidCap 100 finished the session with a decline of 0.19 per cent.

Asian Markets on January 13

Asian indices finished the session mixed on January 13, the Nikkei 225 and Hang Seng finished higher by 3.17 per cent and 0.77 per cent respectively. On the other hand, the KOSPI finished with gains of 1.45 per cent while the Shanghai Composite closed lower by 0.64 per cent.

The public issue of Bharat Coking Coal IPO (BCCL IPO) is set to close for bidding on January 13. On the other hand Amagi Media Labs IPO opened for bidding today and saw tepid subscription as it was booked 6 per cent across categories.

Market Cues

The sentiment for the upcoming sessions is expected to be a mix of cautious optimism and volatility. In the upcoming sessions D-street is expected to factor in domestic cues such as upcoming result announcements by Indian companies and global triggers such as the release of US December CPI data which could spike US bond yields, further adding pressure on Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) flows.
