Got Silver Items As A Diwali Gift? Check Whether They Are Plated Or Real Silver

All that glitters is not gold. And all that shines is not silver as well. If you receive silver coins or other silver items as a Diwali gift, you can check to find out whether it is real silver or silver-plated.

“Real silver (sterling or fine) is usually stamped with BIS hallmark, purity grade like “999” (fine silver) or “925” (sterling), and the jeweller’s/assayer’s mark. Silver-plated items may have no hallmark, feel lighter, and show discoloration or a base metal when scratched,” says Renisha Chainani, head of research, Augmont.

“Real silver has a distinctive shine but not overly glossy like plated metal. Tarnishing over time is normal for pure silver. Fake or plated pieces may reveal a base metal layer if scratched or have a lightweight, tinny feel compared to authentic silver’s dense weight,” says Prithviraj Kothari, Managing Director, RiddiSiddhi Bullions, president of India Bullion and Jewellers Association, and Chairman, Jain International Trade Organisation.

Home Tests To Verify Purity Of Silver 

Simple at-home tests help verify silver purity. The magnet test is easiest—real silver isn’t magnetic, so it won’t stick. The ice test works too; silver conducts heat quickly, so ice melts faster on it. You can also check for a hallmark stamp such as “BIS 999” or “Sterling 925.” “The rub test—rubbing silver on white cloth—may leave a black mark from oxidation, confirming authenticity. Avoid using harsh acids without professional supervision,” says Kothari.

Get It Tested Professionally 

If unsure, get your silver coin or item tested at a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre, found across India. Reputed jewellers and bullion dealers also offer purity checks using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) machines for instant, non-destructive testing.

“Visit a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre or an authorized jeweler for XRF (X-ray fluorescence) testing, which gives an accurate purity report. You can find centers listed on the BIS website under “hallmarking,” says Chainani. 

You can verify authorized centers on the BIS website (www.bis.gov.in). Always request a purity certificate after testing to confirm authenticity and value—especially before resale or exchange during festive or investment periods.
