Financial experts always advise investors to stay invested for the long term and suggest that investing over a long time period can decrease the chances of incurring negative returns. In a release issued by HDFC Mutual Fund on the completion of 30 years of its HDFC Large Cap Fund, the asset management company (AMC) announced that its scheme has delivered a 1,200 per cent absolute returns for lump sum investors who stayed invested in the scheme since inception.
On the other hand, investors who committed to a monthly systematic investment plan (SIP) of Rs 10,000 at the fund's inception in October 1996, would now have a corpus of approximately Rs 8.46 crore as on September 30, 2026. This in turn underscores the potential of long-term investing for investors. Originally, the HDFC Large Cap Fund was known as the HDFC Top 100 Fund and aimed to provide investors a means to participate in India's economic growth.
Over the past three decades in which the fund has been operational, the Indian stock market has experienced multiple phases of turbulence. This includes macroeconomic shocks like the Asian financial crisis, the dot-com bust, the 2008 global financial meltdown, and the sharp pandemic sell-off in 2020.
The AMC said in the release that throughout these market cycles and long bull runs in between, the scheme maintained its focus on well-established companies. This, in turn, has allowed investors to participate in the broader economic growth of the country without being derailed by short-term panic.
An investor contributing Rs 10,000 every month since the first business day of the fund’s inception would have invested a total of Rs 36 lakh by the end of September 2026. The market value of those systematic investments would have grown to Rs 846.39 lakh, representing a 16.99 per cent return on the SIP, according to the release.Lump sum investments followed a similarly impressive trajectory. A one-time investment of Rs 1,00,000 in October 1996 grew roughly 130 times to reach approximately Rs 1.30 crore by September 30, 2026 which indicates a robust compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.62 per cent since the fund's launch.
The underlying strategy driving the returns generated by the scheme relies on large-cap stocks. As on September 30, 2026, the fund's portfolio is distributed across key sectors, such as banking, telecommunications, consumer durables, petroleum products, and pharmaceuticals. The broad sector allocation among large-caps reflects the breadth of India’s corporate landscape and aims to provide investors an opportunity to capture the upside of market leaders.
Upon the completion of 30 years of the scheme, Navneet Munot, managing director and chief executive officer of HDFC AMC, sees further potential in the large-cap space. Reflecting on the journey and the current market environment, the fund house leadership emphasised the importance of staying invested.
“Thirty years is a long time in markets, and HDFC Large Cap Fund has been through several market cycles in that time. This milestone belongs to our investors and partners and we are grateful for the trust they have placed in us across generations. Large-caps are currently at decent valuations. Investors with a long horizon can consider large cap funds for potential wealth creation,” Munot said.
Rahul Baijal, the fund manager of HDFC Large Cap also said that large-caps are currently trading at ‘reasonable valuations’ and present an opportunity for long-term investors .
“Big thanks to all our investors and partners who have been part of this 30-year journey of HDFC Large Cap Fund. It’s been a privilege to be associated with the fund. Large-caps are generally well-established companies with a long track record. At present many of them are trading at relatively reasonable valuations, presenting an opportunity for long-term investors,” he added.
