Equity benchmarks ended the week in the positive territory, breaking an eight-week run of losses, as buying on the final trading day lifted sentiment. The Nifty 50 gained 0.44 per cent during the week to close at 22,520, rising 1.30 per cent on October 9. The BSE Sensex advanced 0.78 per cent for the week, ending Friday’s session at 72,472, up 879 points or 1.23 per cent.

IT stocks led the recovery, followed by banking, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and auto stocks.

The broader market recovery was more modest. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 0.09 per cent during the week, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.44 per cent.

Stock Market Cues To Track This Week

Investors will look for sustained buying across sectors and market segments to assess whether the rebound can continue. Inflation data, earnings commentary and foreign fund flows will be key to determining the market’s next move.

India Inflation Data

The consumer price index (CPI) inflation data for September, scheduled for October 12, will be the first major domestic trigger. Wholesale price index (WPI) inflation data, due on October 14, will offer further insight into price pressures across the economy.

The data will be watched closely after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.50 per cent in its October policy review and shifted towards calibrated tightening. Inflation readings could influence expectations around the central bank’s next policy decisions, although one month’s data alone is unlikely to determine its course.

Q2 FY27 Earnings

The earnings calendar will also get busier, with HCL Technologies, Hero MotoCorp, Tech Mahindra, Wipro and Nestle India scheduled to announce their September-quarter results.

Investors will look for management commentary on demand conditions, revenue growth, and margins to assess whether corporate earnings can support a sustained market recovery.

US Inflation Data, Retail Sales To Guide Global Sentiment

On the global front, US inflation data will be a key trigger for equities. Core Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is scheduled for release on October 14, followed by core retail sales data on October 15. US existing home sales are due on October 13, while eurozone CPI inflation is scheduled for October 16.

The US inflation readings will be important for gauging the path of interest rates and the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook. Stronger-than-expected price pressures could keep borrowing costs elevated for longer, putting pressure on equity valuations, particularly in rate-sensitive sectors. Softer inflation could ease those concerns, depending on the wider economic data.

US Treasury Yields

US Treasury yields will also remain on investors' radar. The 10-year US Treasury yield stood at 5.24 per cent, a level that keeps global financial conditions tight and can make emerging-market assets less attractive to foreign investors.

Crude Oil Price

Crude oil prices are another variable to watch out for. Brent crude was trading at $104.70 per barrel, up 0.42 per cent, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 0.39 per cent to $91.85 per barrel.

Elevated oil prices pose a risk to India's inflation and current account outlook, given its dependence on imported crude. A sustained rise in prices could also add to pressure on the rupee and corporate margins, particularly for companies with high fuel or input costs.

Geopolitical developments will remain relevant as well, given their potential to trigger sharp moves in oil prices and global risk appetite.

FPI Flows, Rupee

Foreign portfolio investor (FPI) activity and the rupee’s movement against the dollar will be closely tracked after weeks of selling pressure weighed on domestic equities.

The rupee was trading at 96.77 against the dollar. Continued weakness in the currency, alongside elevated US yields, could make Indian equities less attractive to overseas investors and add to volatility if foreign outflows persist.

Foreign selling also remains a concern for the durability of the latest recovery. The gains on October 9 helped the benchmarks snap their losing streak, but investors will look for evidence of sustained buying rather than a short-lived rebound.

Domestic institutional investor (DII) activity and the breadth of the recovery will be important in assessing whether local buying can offset continued foreign outflows. Market participants will also watch whether gains extend beyond a handful of large-cap stocks and sectors.
