The Ayushman Bharat Yojana or PM-JAY has been active since 2018. However, on October 29, 2024, the government expanded its coverage to encompass all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income level. With healthcare inflation at approximately 14 percent, this extension could provide substantial relief to senior citizens.
The program offers cashless medical treatment at selected government and private hospitals. Approximately 2000 medical procedures are available, but state governments have the authority to modify and expand the packages, rates, and the list of hospitals within their region.
As per the notification from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at the start of this month, approximately 2.5 million Ayushman Vaya Vandana Cards have been distributed since the scheme's expansion, allowing senior citizens to avail benefits totalling Rs 400 million.
The main benefit of the scheme is the instant coverage of all pre-existing conditions without any waiting period. Beneficiaries need to sign up for the service and will receive an Ayushman card to access the benefits.
The scheme is advantageous for broadening health coverage to a larger population. Nevertheless, more careful consideration should be given when choosing hospitals for the scheme, as it might turn into a profit-making venture for hospitals, potentially compromising patients' health.
Despite the scheme expanding healthcare coverage to millions, challenges remain. The incident highlights the need for stricter monitoring and enforcement to ensure the scheme benefits its intended recipients and does not facilitate unethical practices.
