Rising petrol prices in the last few days have once again brought fuel costs into focus, with rates being increased on four occasions since May 15, 2026. These hikes were recorded on May 15, May 19, May 23, and May 25.
Amid this ongoing rise in fuel prices, a video has now gone viral on social media where a man named Vineet Bansal shared his perspective on fuel prices in a post on his Instagram account, speaking at a petrol pump while standing in front of his Audi luxury car. In the clip, he is shown speaking about how different sections of society experience the impact of fuel costs in different ways.
He said that some people might say that a price increase of Rs 3 or even Rs 30 won’t make a significant difference. However, this view will generally be coming from those who are financially comfortable. He said that as an Audi owner, such price changes won’t significantly affect his personal expenses, but it won’t be the same for everybody.
He said that the effect of rising fuel prices is not uniform across all sections of society. While it may not be substantial for some, it can be significant for daily commuters who depend on fuel for their livelihood.
He added that autorickshaw drivers, two-wheeler users and lower-income families are among those most affected by fuel price increases. The impact of rising fuel prices is felt more strongly by individuals and families operating on very limited budgets.
He added that the government could consider a two-tier fuel pricing system along with a rationing mechanism. Smaller vehicles such as two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws could be provided a limited daily quantity of fuel at a lower price, while luxury vehicle owners could be allowed a higher daily limit at a comparatively higher rate. He explained the idea with an example by suggesting around 2 litres per day for two-wheelers and around 10 litres per day for luxury vehicles.
The video has garnered over three million views and more than 300,000 likes on social media. Several users have appreciated the perspective shared in the video, but others have raised concerns about the proposed idea.
