India is set to launch the much-anticipated Central Know Your Customer (CKYC) 2.0 project. The project seeks to change the retail financial landscape across the country by streamlining the onboarding process for functions across banking, investing and insurance.

According to a report by news agency Reuters, which cited sources privy to the matter, banks and insurers are set to launch a common customer identification system in August 2026. The unified system is likely to bridge the gap between various services, resulting in an onboarding experience for retail customers across money, investments, and insurance.

What Is CKYC 2.0?

CKYC 2.0 is an upgraded version of India's existing central KYC registry. The project is set to be jointly executed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).

The CKYC 2.0 framework is set to allow financial institutions to fetch customers' verified identity details directly from a secure central database. By doing so, individuals will not need to submit physical documents or digital proofs each time they open new accounts. According to the report, the process is strictly driven, and institutions require explicit customer approval through a one-time password before data is accessed. The CKYC 2.0 framework’s key upgrade over the existing system is related to the way data is scored for accuracy. Under the existing system, institutions often encounter issues such as duplicate entries and outdated information, leading them to demand fresh paperwork anyway.

Why Is CKYC 2.0 Being Launched?

The new framework is being launched to reduce the onboarding friction and paperwork that burdens both customers and service providers. Industry stakeholders anticipate that a simplified process can potentially encourage financial participation from more and more regions in India.

India has witnessed a rise in the number of bank accounts following various initiatives announced by the Centre for increasing financial inclusion. However, participation in mutual funds and insurance still remains relatively low. The simplification of the KYC process is expected to remove onboarding hurdles associated with identity verification and boost participation.

Additionally, CKYC 2.0 is expected to aid regulators in both detecting and preventing fraud, as having a single digital identity framework makes customer records easier to access for secure monitoring.  The consolidated view of customer activity across banking, insurance, and capital markets can aid authorities in tracking suspicious transactions efficiently and ensure a higher degree of compliance across the entire sector.Despite the report, the timeline for the nationwide rollout of CKYC 2.0 remains tentative. Sources cited in the report declined to be identified as they are not authorised to speak to the media.
