Modi Government Completes 12 Years: Key Economic, Welfare Schemes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 10 became India's longest-serving elected prime minister in continuous office, completing 4,399 consecutive days in the post and surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru's record of 4,398 days. Also, today marks the 12th anniversary of the National Democratic Alliance government.

On the occasion, an NDA conclave is scheduled to be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi at 3 pm on Wednesday, with Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and senior leaders from NDA-ruled states and Union Territories expected to attend. During this period, the government introduced several schemes focused on areas such as banking, housing, healthcare, entrepreneurship and social welfare. Here is a look at some of the key initiatives launched over the last 12 years.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in August 2014 to expand access to banking services and promote financial inclusion. According to official data, more than 58.3 crore accounts have been opened under the scheme so far. Also, there is Rs 3 lakh crore balance in such beneficiary accounts.

Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY)

Launched on April 8, 2015, the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana provides collateral-free loans to small and micro non-corporate, non-farm businesses. The scheme offers loans of up to Rs 10 lakh, which can go up to Rs 20 lakh for eligible repeat borrowers under the Tarun category. According to official data, it has disbursed over Rs 40.07 lakh crore through 57.79 crore loans.

Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY)

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), scheme was launched in September 2018. The eligible families receive health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation. It focuses on reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses and improving access to treatment for beneficiaries.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana provides LPG connections to women from poor households without requiring a security deposit. As of July 2025, the scheme has provided over 10 crore LPG connections. The subsidised cylinder quota was earlier 12 per year, later reduced to 9, and has now been brought down to 4.

PM-KISAN

Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), eligible landholding farmer families receive Rs 6,000 per year in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 each through Direct Benefit Transfer. Since its launch, the scheme has disbursed over Rs 4.27 lakh crore, making it one of the largest DBT programmes globally.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, launched in 2015 under the “Housing for All” mission, provides financial assistance for pucca houses to economically weaker sections, lower-income groups, and middle-income groups. Its rural component, PMAY-Gramin, was rolled out in 2016 to address housing needs in rural areas.

Make in India

The Make in India initiative, introduced in September 2014, focuses on boosting manufacturing, which attracts investment, and encouraging innovation in the country. It aims to position India as a global hub for production and design, supported by improvements in processes, infrastructure, new sectors and a shift in mindset.
