A road accident in November 2020 left a State Bank of India (SBI) customer’s family seeking an insurance benefit linked to his debit card. Nearly six years later, the Panipat District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directed the bank to pay his legal heirs Rs 2 lakh, along with compensation and litigation costs.

The order, dated October 8, followed a complaint by the man’s wife and son. They said the bank had not processed the claim despite being informed of the accident and receiving requests for payment.

Debit Card Was Valid When Accident Occurred

The man died on November 8, 2020, from injuries sustained in the accident. His debit card was valid from August 2020 to July 2025, so the accident took place during that period, according to a recent report by The Indian Express.

His wife told the commission that she approached the bank after the accident, but the matter was prolonged. She said a legal notice also went unanswered. The family alleged that SBI had neither arranged for a surveyor nor lodged the insurance claim.

SBI did not appear before the commission despite receiving notice. The case was therefore heard ex parte, meaning the bank did not present its side before the panel.

The family submitted the debit card, bank statement, death certificate, driving licence and the first information report relating to the accident. The commission also noted that the account statement showed charges had been deducted for continuation of the card.

Legal Heirs Entitled To The Benefit

The commission found that the card’s terms provided Rs 2 lakh in accident insurance and held that the deceased customer’s wife and son, as his legal heirs, could receive the benefit. It directed SBI to pay them the insured amount, Rs 11,000 as compensation, and Rs 5,500 towards litigation costs. The total award comes to Rs 2.16 lakh.

The decision turns on the terms applicable to this card and the evidence submitted by the family. Debit card insurance is not a uniform benefit across all cards: the cover and eligibility conditions can vary by card variant and the bank’s applicable terms. Account holders and families should check the card’s insurance details rather than assume that every debit card carries the same protection.

What Families Should Check

For a claim linked to a debit card, the family may need to establish that the cardholder was covered when the accident occurred and meet the insurer’s documentation requirements. The documents in this case included the card, bank statement, death certificate, driving licence and police record of the accident. The relevant policy or card terms should be checked for the required documents and any time limits for informing the bank or insurer.

The ruling also shows why families should keep copies of claim forms, emails, letters and acknowledgements when pursuing a benefit. If the bank or insurer does not respond, a written complaint can help establish when the claim was raised and what documents were provided.

The commission’s order addresses the claim before it. It does not mean that every accident involving a debit card will qualify for insurance payment; cover depends on the applicable terms and whether their conditions are met.
