Social Security Payment In Mysuru: Benefits Stopped For Over One Lakh Beneficiaries

Over one lakh individuals in Mysuru have been suspended from receiving the social security pension following a statewide verification drive led by the revenue department. The suspension has led these people into uncertainty over their future financial support. The vulnerable population receiving social security includes elderly citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities whose monthly pension has been brought to a halt.

The suspension order was issued with the intention of removing doubtful beneficiaries from the list who may have submitted forged or inconsistent documentation when applying for social security. Investigation into the system reveals discrepancies in documents, such as age proof and income details.

While the eligibility criteria for most of the state and union-led schemes require that the applicant must have an income below Rs 32,000 and possess a valid below the poverty line (BPL) card. As reported by the Times of India, officials noted that many pensions were halted because income certificates showed figures higher than the prescriber cap, or in several cases, BPL card details were missing or illegible in the system.

However, the magnitude of the problem cannot be ignored because approximately four lakh people rely on these social security schemes in Mysuru for their daily needs. The suspension has hit several taluks, and at varying degrees of severity, it shows the large-scale re-verification and scope of the revenue department’s drive. Reportedly, Nanjangud, a temple town in Karnataka, has been the most significantly affected, with more than 20,000 suspensions. This is followed by T Narasipura with 16,225 and Periyapatna with 13,812 suspensions.

Besides this, a substantial cut in social security beneficiaries has been made in Hunsur (13,188), HD Kote (10,654), Saligrama (6,221), KR Nagar (5,999), and Saragur (5,839).

HM Dakshayini, the assistant director of social security schemes, clarified that although the benefits were suspended for over 1.3 lakh beneficiaries initially, the process doesn’t negate the question of recovery. To date, payments for 20,167 people have been successfully restored following a thorough verification.

The government is now utilising the Sanyojane mobile app to facilitate these checks, improve transparency, and prevent the misuse of public funds. The audit covers various social security programmes running in the state, including Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension (IGNOAP), the Sandhya Suraksha Yojana, the National Family Benefit Scheme, and specialised programs like the Manaswini and widow pensions linked to farmer suicide cases.

For those still in the waiting, the stakes are high. Those beneficiaries who have been flagged as ‘doubtful’ have been issued notice with a strict 30-day window to submit their updated documents (income certificate, address proof, aadhaar cards, BPL documentation from their respective Tahsildars).

For many beneficiaries, this social security is their lifeline, but the uncertainty looms until their documentation is verified and the pension is restored.
