UIDAI discontinues mAadhaar app
New Aadhaar app has more features for user data protection
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially discontinued its mAadhaar application from June 30 and is encouraging users to switch to the newly launched Aadhaar App. The new app promises a simpler, faster and more secure digital identity experience compared to the mAadhaar app.
The new Aadhaar App has been designed with an increased focus on privacy and user control. One of its key features is selective information sharing. Instead of revealing the entire Aadhaar profile during verification, users can share only the specific details required for a service, reducing the risk of unnecessary data exposure and misuse.
Another major upgrade is QR code-based Aadhaar sharing. Users can securely share their Aadhaar details by scanning a QR code, eliminating the need to carry physical photocopies or hand over printed copies of their Aadhaar card. The app also supports offline verification, allowing users to authenticate their identity even without an internet connection in certain situations.
The new application also introduces face authentication and biometric lock features. Users can verify their identity using facial recognition technology and lock or unlock their biometric information directly through the app. These features are aimed at strengthening security and giving users greater control over their personal data.
The new app also offers a redesigned and more user-friendly interface. According to UIDAI, it provides quicker access to Aadhaar-related services and a smoother digital experience compared to the older mAadhaar platform. UIDAI has urged users to download the new Aadhaar app from official app stores and migrate at the earliest.
The new app can be downloaded on Android (version 9.0 and above) and Apple iPhones running iOS 16 or newer models. Download the app from the Google Play Store or the App Store, after which users need to complete a one-time registration.
To register, first open the app and select your preferred language. Users need to then enter their Aadhaar number and accept the ‘Terms and Conditions’. Select the mobile SIM which is linked to the app, and complete your face authentication. Now, set a secure six-digit PIN to log in.
