UIDAI extends free Aadhaar document update deadline till 2027

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the deadline for free online Aadhaar document updates by another year, giving Aadhaar holders more time to update and verify their records without paying any fee. Earlier, the facility was available only till June 2026.
According to an office memorandum issued by UIDAI on May 13, 2026, the decision was taken after a large number of Aadhaar holders used the online document update facility through the myAadhaar portal. The authority said the service will now remain free from June 15, 2026, to June 14, 2027.
The free facility applies only to document updates related to proof of identity (PoI) and proof of address (PoA). Aadhaar holders who need to upload fresh supporting documents or update records linked to their Aadhaar profile can do so online without any charge during this period. However, the waiver is limited to updates carried out through the myAadhaar portal. Users visiting Aadhaar enrolment or update centres for the same service will continue to pay Rs 75 as the applicable fee.
UIDAI has stated that the document update process through the myAadhaar portal is designed to be completed online in a few steps. Users need to log in using their Aadhaar number and authenticate the request through a one-time password (OTP) sent to their registered mobile number.
After verification, users can upload scanned copies of valid proof of identity and proof of address documents and submit the update request online. After submitting the request successfully, an Update Request Number (URN) consisting of 14 digits will be created. The URN can later be used for checking the status of the request.
It has been recommended by the authority that users should keep the URN secure until the update request is completed. UIDAI has repeatedly encouraged Aadhaar holders to ensure that the details linked to their Aadhaar remain updated, especially if there has been a change in address or supporting documents over time.
Along with the extension announcement, UIDAI has also shared details about a new Aadhaar mobile application that will gradually replace the existing mAadhaar app. In a post shared on X, the authority said the upcoming app will include features such as QR code-based Aadhaar sharing, stronger privacy controls and simpler access to Aadhaar-related services.
According to UIDAI, the new application is being developed to make digital identity services more accessible and easier to use. The authority has not yet announced a final rollout date for the transition from the current mAadhaar application.
UIDAI has also clarified the charges applicable for different Aadhaar update services. Biometric updates, including fingerprints, iris scans and photographs, remain free for children during mandatory age-based updates. In other cases, biometric updates may cost Rs 125.
Demographic changes such as name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number or email updates are free only when carried out along with biometric updates. Otherwise, users are required to pay Rs 75 for such changes.
For now, Aadhaar holders can continue updating proof of identity and proof of address documents online free of cost through the myAadhaar portal till June 14, 2027.
