The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has started a new service that allows Aadhaar holders to add or update their email address through the Aadhaar mobile app without visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. The facility became available on July 1, 2026, and will be free for six months.
UIDAI has said that the new option is meant to make it easier for residents to keep their Aadhaar details up to date through the app. Within two days of the launch, more than 250,000 users have updated their email addresses using the service.
UIDAI said that linking an email address with Aadhaar allows users to receive alerts whenever an authentication request is made using their Aadhaar number. These alerts have helped users know when their Aadhaar has been used and check authentication activity.
The authority added that users no longer have to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra to update their email address, as the process can now be completed through the app.
The updated Aadhaar app has crossed 31 million downloads within five months of its launch. During this period, more than four million users have updated their Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers through the app, while around one million users have updated their address details.
The app also allows users to update their mobile number and address. It supports face authentication, allowing identity verification without submitting physical documents.
Users can also download e-Aadhaar, check their authentication history and book appointments at Aadhaar Seva Kendras through the app.
The updated app allows users to share only the details needed for verification through encrypted QR codes instead of handing over photocopies of their Aadhaar card. This gives users more control over the personal information they share.
The app also allows users to lock or unlock their Aadhaar biometrics with a single tap to help prevent unauthorised use.
Another feature supports Offline Verification Seeking Entity (OVSE) QR code scanning for identity checks during hotel check-ins, hospital admissions, visitor management, and onboarding of gig workers.
UIDAI has said that these digital features have reduced the need to carry a physical Aadhaar card while making identity verification quicker across different services. The authority added that the free email update service will be available through the Aadhaar app for six months from July 1, 2026 onwards.
