For Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) members, a growing part of account management can now be done without visiting an Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) office. From checking contributions and updating know-your-customer (KYC) details to transferring balances and filing claims, several services are available digitally.

The changes are useful, but they also put greater responsibility on members to keep their records in order. A mismatch in Aadhaar, bank details or employment history can surface at the time of a claim and slow down the process.

What EPF Members Can Do Online

Members can use EPFO’s digital services to view their passbook and check employee and employer contributions, interest credits and transactions linked to their provident fund account, according to a recent report by India Today.

Eligible members can also submit online claims for final PF settlement or partial withdrawals for permitted purposes, including illness, marriage, education and housing, subject to the applicable conditions.

Those changing jobs can use the online transfer facility to move their provident fund balance and service details from an earlier employment to the current account. Members can also add or update nominations, an important step for ensuring that eligible family members can claim benefits if the member dies.

KYC details such as Aadhaar, PAN and bank account information can also be linked or updated. These details are particularly important because problems with KYC can affect online claims and other services.

One point members should note is that UAN generation and activation are no longer carried out through the member portal. EPFO has shifted these services to the UMANG app, where Aadhaar-based face authentication is used.

Check These Details Before You File A Claim

Before initiating a withdrawal or transfer, members should first check whether their Universal Account Number (UAN) is active and whether the Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details linked to it are correct, according to a recent report by Mint.

The mobile number linked to Aadhaar should also be working, since authentication for several digital services depends on it.

Employment records deserve a closer look as well. The date of joining and date of exit should be correctly reflected in EPFO records. If a member has worked with more than one employer, the linked Member IDs and service history should also be checked.

The nomination should not be ignored either. Keeping family and nominee details updated can make it easier for dependants to access provident fund, pension, or insurance-related benefits later.

Going online may have reduced the need for routine office visits, but it does not eliminate paperwork problems. Members who periodically check their EPF records are less likely to discover a mismatch only when they urgently need to withdraw or transfer money.
