UP Man Allegedly Kills Wife, Stages Road Accident To Claim Rs 44 Lakh Insurance

A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district allegedly killed his wife with the help of three associates and tried to pass off the death as a road accident to claim Rs 44 lakh under an insurance policy.

The accused, Amar Singh, had initially approached the police to report his wife Rita missing. He later appeared before investigators to identify her body. Police said inconsistencies in his account, evidence recovered from the scene and technical surveillance eventually led them to suspect his involvement within 48 hours.

Body Found By Roadside

Rita’s body was found beside a road in Hamirpur on the night of July 29 after local farmers noticed it while returning from their fields. The circumstances initially suggested that she might have died in a road accident.

Police were unable to identify her immediately. A bank account slip recovered during the investigation reportedly provided an important lead and helped establish her identity. Her father, Sarvesh Kumar Gupta, subsequently filed a complaint, following which a murder case was registered, according to a recent report by NDTV.

Meanwhile, Amar had lodged a missing-person complaint at Sumerpur police station. He later identified the body after news of the unidentified woman’s death emerged. Investigators alleged that these actions were intended to distance him from the crime and make it appear that he did not know what had happened.

Insurance Policy Under Scanner

According to Rita’s father, Amar had taken an insurance policy of Rs 44 lakh in her name about two months before her death and paid Rs 2.60 lakh as the first premium.

Police alleged that Amar and the other accused were facing financial liabilities and planned to use the insurance proceeds to repay them. Investigators also claimed that the accused had decided how the money would be distributed. Amar was allegedly expected to receive Rs 15 lakh, while the remaining amount was to be divided among the others.

Rita had married Amar around two years ago after the death of her first husband. She had been living and working in Kanpur, where she met Amar, who reportedly worked at a flour mill.

Death Allegedly Staged As Accident

Police alleged that Amar took Rita to a road near Paudhiya, where the other accused were waiting in a car. She was allegedly assaulted before being struck and run over with the vehicle. Her body was then left near the road to create the appearance of an accident.

The post-mortem examination reportedly found more than 12 external injuries and extensive internal damage.

Police arrested Amar along with Amit Gupta, also known as Ram, Pushpendra Soni, also known as Sahil, and Abhay Singh, also known as Golu. The car allegedly used in the crime and a SIM card were also recovered in the case. All four accused have been produced before a court, and further legal proceedings are underway.
