Gen Z Eyes Global Degrees Amid Visa Shifts And Career Aspirations

To most Gen Zs, fame through social media might seem like an easy and instant path of success, but the truth usually hangs on luck, timing, or influential connections. On the contrary, studying abroad presents a merit-driven way to individual and professional development, increasingly becoming more of a preferred choice for ambitious students.

The tightening of US visa policy has contributed to a noticeable shift in student preferences. The UK, Germany, France, and Australia are emerging as strong alternatives to the hitherto popular US path.

Education Lenders Adapt to New Mobility Patterns

This shifting scene has compelled education financing firms to expand their products. Sonal Kapoor, chief product officer and global chief business officer at Prodigy Finance, said that increasing numbers of students are looking at (non-U.S.) alternatives because of continued visa issues.

"Despite the ongoing visa crisis, students continue to apply to study in the USA. Some are willing to wait a year for the situation to improve, while others have already made the switch," Kapoor said. "The demand for studying abroad is expected to increase as students pursue quality education and better career opportunities."

To satisfy this need, lending and education financing institutions are increasing support for additional universities in Europe and Australia, allowing students to access institutions that were previously considered secondary options.

Global Degrees Provide Competitive Returns

What makes studying abroad even more appealing is the higher earning potential for graduates in global markets. According to statistics from Indeed, Glassdoor, and government sources, starting salaries fluctuate significantly by region, with international economies paying higher.

General graduates in India typically get between Rs 2.1 to Rs 3.5 lakh per annum, while IT and MBA graduates should look for starting pay of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 30 lakh depending upon qualification and sector.

General graduates in the US would typically get between 40,000 and 62,000 dollars a year, while MBAs in a particular field would earn up to 130,000 dollars. In the UK, graduates in London begin on approximately 28,634 pounds per annum, with IT and consulting jobs paying as much as 60,000 pounds.

This pay difference, added to the validity of an overseas degree, makes foreign education a strong return on investment for most students.

More Than Just a Degree

Outside of the classroom, a global degree has also emerged as a new type of status symbol, one rooted in ambition, not calculators. For Gen Z, it represents credibility, independence, and a forward-thinking approach.

However, Kapoor emphasises the importance of choosing wisely. "Studying abroad can be one of the best decisions of your life, but it's essential to conduct thorough research before making your choice," she said.

"Neglecting to do so may hinder your chances of securing better job opportunities."
