NIAL Restricts Construction Activity In 20-kilometre radius Around Jewar Airport

The Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL) has issued a new advisory restricting any construction activity or tree planting within a 20-kilometre radius of the upcoming Jewar airport. The advisory, released on July 12, makes it mandatory for builders, residents, and local authorities to obtain Height Clearance or a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) before initiating any such activity.

Earlier on July 10, the Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) and the Gautam Budh Nagar district administration banned all construction activities within a 10-kilometre radius of the airport. Notably no construction activity can be undertaken in the area without a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the concerned authorities.

Why Is Construction Around Jewar Airport Restricted

The restrictions have been put in place to step up measures to safeguard flight operations and ensure compliance in surrounding areas. The restrictions placed on construction in the area followed an Airport Environment Management Committee (AEMC) meeting, where officials flagged concerns regarding illegal constructions posing risks to aircraft safety.

After the concerns were highlighted, the safety of the area around the Noida International Airport was also reviewed by the AEMC. Noida International Airport chief operating officer Kiren Jain emphasised the need for tighter supervision of the area, pointing out potential hazards from stray animals, birds, and unlawful construction.

The measures are being taken up at a time when the airport is almost finished and officials are stepping up their efforts to keep the airspace clear of obstacles which can compromise aircraft safety or disrupt navigation systems. According to a report by news agency PTI, proposals for vertical development will now be assessed using a Colour-Coded Zoning Map (CCZM), and applicants may be directed to apply through the Airport Authority of India’s No Objection Certificate Application System (NOCAS) portal based on height specifications. All stakeholders including builders, landowners and residents have been strongly advised to halt any unauthorised construction or tree-planting within the 20 km safeguarded zone.

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation's aviation safety regulations violations of the above mentioned restrictions may result in penalties along with the demolition of unauthorized constructions.
