The Income Tax Department streamlines PAN services with free updates and digital delivery

The Income Tax Department is modernising the Permanent Account Number (PAN) services through the PAN 2.0 project to make it possible for users to easily apply for, update or even acquire their PAN details digitally. While the project is yet to be officially launched, taxpayers can already obtain their PAN as an e-PAN through email. The service is free for new allotments or updates, while a nominal charge applies for physical PAN cards or additional services. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to apply and receive your PAN on your registered email ID.

Key Features of PAN 2.0

Under PAN 2.0, PAN cards issued earlier will remain valid even if they do not contain a QR code. Fresh allotment, updation, or correction will be made free of cost, and the e-PAN will be mailed to the registered email of the applicant. If an applicant wants the physical PAN card, the applicant needs to pay Rs 50 as domestic postage charges. In the case of international postage, Rs 15 plus postal charges will be levied.

In the PAN 2.0 initiative, the taxpayers can also free of cost update their email ID in the income tax database so that the process of e-PAN delivery would be smooth.

How to Apply for PAN through NSDL

Before initiating the process, determine whether your PAN was issued by NSDL or UTI Infrastructure and Technology and Services Ltd. (UTIITSL). This information can be found on the back of your PAN card. Depending on the issuer, follow these steps to receive your PAN digitally.

5. Payment Process: According to Protean’s website, taxpayers can receive their e-PAN free of cost up to three times within 30 days of application or updates. Beyond this, a nominal fee of Rs 8.26 (inclusive of GST) applies. Agree to the terms and conditions, confirm the payment amount, and proceed with payment.

6. Receive e-PAN: After successful payment, the e-PAN will be emailed to your registered email ID within 30 minutes. If not received, you can contact Protean via email at tininfo@proteantech.in or call their customer care numbers: 020-27218080 or 020-27218081.

Steps to Apply for PAN via UTIITSL

The process to receive an e-PAN via UTIITSL is equally simple:

1. Visit the UTIITSL Website: Go to UTIITSL's e-PAN portal https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN_ONLINE/ePANCard

2. Provide PAN Details: Enter your PAN, date of birth, and the captcha code, then click submit.

3. Verify Email ID: The system will verify whether an email ID already exists in the income tax database. If it doesn't, then free update of the email ID will be provided under PAN 2.0 when the scheme gets launched.

4. Download e-PAN: If the e-PAN was issued in the last month, it will be delivered to your email at no cost. In case of requests over a month, applicants need to pay Rs 8.26, including taxes.

Physical PAN Card Requests

A PAN card can be requested for a fee if one prefers a physical card. Domestic applicants are charged Rs 50, while international applicants are charged Rs 15 plus postal costs.

Increased Accessibility and Convenience

The PAN 2.0 initiative streamlines the application and update process, focusing on digital delivery to minimize paperwork and processing times. It will ensure that taxpayers can smoothly manage their PAN information; they can even update or correct details without extra charges.
