OLM B-Schools Ranking: Why? How? What?

OLM Desk

The admission process to enroll into an MBA programme commences at least a year before one can start attending the course. While the sheer number of common entrance exams to enter the hallowed institutions can scare ordinary souls, the die-hard MBA fanatic would take each and every exam possible to get into a B-school. At the core, the course, specialisation remains the same at most B-schools; yet, some stand apart compared to the rest. For instance, it is rare to come across an institute that does not claim to have the best placement for academics. But these claims alone will not help you narrow down the final selection process.

The power of social media allows you the access and help reach out to a wide spectrum of students, staff and alumni at various B-schools. The super league schools are all very similar on the surface. But with a little digging it’s possible to find large number of differences between different business schools. Those differences may be small things like the option to select your electives or having an access to an incubation cell. As you add up all these differences and then compare B-schools, you’ll definitely see distinct picture emerge.

Query Corner

* Faculty background
* The kind of companies that visit the campus
* Placement policy
* Industry and international exposure
* Infrastructure in the business school
* Active and happy alumni network

Every B-school offers courses across every subject area. But some schools excel at certain areas. For instance, some are better known for marketing, while some focus more on general management with no focus on any specialisation.

Enrolling with a B-school which has its USP may help your employment prospects and definitely provide you with a better exposure in select subject area.

With several B-schools mushrooming without any checks and balances, there is a huge churning of unhappy and dissatisfied professionals. The focus in some cases is tilting towards quantity over quality. While everyone is the loser here—the company, the student and the business school, you should not aspire to be in such a B-school. While an MBA from a good B-school opens doors anywhere, do not blindly go by where you get admission or zero in on an institute purely based on location and convenience.
