In a significant move towards enhancing accessibility for India’s unorganised workforce, the government has upgraded the e-Shram portal to support all 22 Scheduled Languages. Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Labour and Employment, launched the multilingual function, which is consistent with the portal's goal of becoming a one-stop shop for workers seeking access to different government aid systems.

Previously available only in English, Hindi, Kannada, and Marathi, the portal now enables workers across the country to register and avail benefits in their native languages.

e-Shram Portal: Bridging the Gap for Workers

To connect unorganised workers such as gig workers, platform workers, and construction labourers with important social programs, the e-Shram portal has proven essential. Dr Mandaviya remarked, “The portal records over 30,000 registrations daily, reflecting the growing trust among unorganised workers.”

Sumita Dawra, the Labour Secretary, also noted, “We are working on integrating central and state-level welfare programs into the e-Shram portal to ensure comprehensive access to social security benefits.”

Upcoming Features to Simplify Access

To further improve the e-Shram portal, the government has listed a number of enhancements. In order to facilitate access, Dawra shared plans to expand the portal to include both central and state-level schemes, integrate payment gateways for smooth benefit transfers, and work with intermediaries like Common Service Centres, Bank Correspondents, and MY Bharat volunteers. Additionally, the Ministry of Labour & Employment mentioned that the launch of an e-Shram Mobile App, a single application form for streamlined sign-on, and payment gateway integration are among the next initiatives aimed at improving welfare services for unorganised workers.

With the e-Shram portal, unorganised workers can access a variety of government social programs intended to enhance their well-being and means of subsistence. After its recent upgrade to include 22 languages and the addition of new user-friendly features, the portal is evolving into a more accessible and efficient tool, ensuring that workers across India can easily access social security benefits and government support.
