RBI initiative may simplify banking for regional language users
With banking services rapidly going digital, many users across India continue to struggle with banking apps or websites that predominantly use English. According to a report released by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and KPMG in January 2025, only 10 per cent of the country's 900 million smartphone users feel comfortable in English.
To address this, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) are developing a multilingual language system for banking and financial services, known as Banking BHASHINI.
However, Banking BHASHINI and BHASHINI are not the same thing.
BHASHINI is the Government's more extensive language technology initiative already being implemented in various sectors, including healthcare, railways, education and governance. Banking BHASHINI is a banking-focused project being developed by the RBI based on the BHASHINI language system.
The Banking BHASHINI is being developed under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between RBI and DIBD in February 2026. The objective is to facilitate banking communication and financial services in the country's 22 scheduled languages.
BHASHINI was launched in the National Language Translation Mission (NTM) as part of the initiative to aid digital services in various Indian languages. Currently over 35 Indian languages and dialects are supported on the platform. It provides language tools such as:
speech-to-text
text-to-speech
translation
transliteration
optical character recognition (OCR)
These tools are already being used in some government platforms and digital public services.
The platform is also trained using language datasets that are collected through a program called "BhashaDaan", which involves collecting speech and text samples in various Indian languages. Over 1,00,000 hours of speech data and large-scale multi-lingual text datasets have been collected to date.
Banking BHASHINI is a project being developed specifically for banking under the ambit of BHASHINI.
Banking BHASHINI is not going to be a standalone, separate app. Instead, the BHASHINI language AI models are being integrated directly into the banking and financial services users already use, as a part of their current banking systems, apps, web pages, and customer service.
The idea is to make banking easier for users who are more comfortable in regional languages.
Banking BHASHINI, when implemented fully across the banking sector in future, may allow the customers to:
Have access to banking services in regional languages,
Use voice commands to perform certain banking functions
Receive banking instructions in native language(s)
Communicate with multi-lingual customer service systems
understand banking forms and alerts more easily
For instance, a consumer updating KYC information or submitting a complaint may be given instructions in Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Assamese or other regional languages rather than relying only on English.
The system may particularly impact:
First-time digital banking users,
Elderly customers,
Users in rural and semi-urban areas,
Those who are not comfortable using English.
Digital banking has expanded rapidly over the past few years, especially with the introduction of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile banking, and online financial services.
As per the official data, over 17,000 crore transactions were completed using UPI in 2025 along. At the same time, many banking platforms still use English-heavy interfaces and technical financial terms.
Even though users are be able to make digital payments, many face difficulties in understanding loan conditions, banking forms, customer complaints systems, or financial product details.
RBI and DIBD have not yet provided a timeline for the official rollout of Banking BHASHINI.
