September Bank Holidays: Check Dates For Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami, And Others Before Visiting Your Branch

Banks across India will observe holidays in September 2026 for festivals, regional occasions and regular weekly closures, with the exact dates depending on where a branch is located. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar has listed closures linked to Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Karma Puja, the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji and Indrajatra, among other observances.

Customers who need branch-based services such as locker access, cheque-related work, demand drafts, cash transactions, or account paperwork will need to check the holiday applicable to their branch before visiting. The second and fourth Saturdays, September 12 and September 26, will be holidays nationwide, while all Sundays will also be weekly holidays.

September Bank Holiday Dates

The key dates in the RBI bank holiday calendar are:

• September 4: Janmashtami (Vaishnava) / Krishna Jayanthi, with closures in select locations.

• September 12: Second Saturday and Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva. The second Saturday closure will apply nationwide, with an additional regional holiday in Guwahati.

• September 14: Ganesh Chaturthi / Ganesh Puja / Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata / Hartalika, with closures in select locations.

• September 15: Samvatsari (Chaturthi Paksha) / Nuakhai / Ganesh Chaturthi (second day), with closures in select locations.

• September 21: Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva / Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi, with closures in select locations.

• September 22: Karma Puja, with banks closed in Ranchi.

Why Bank Holidays Vary By Location

Bank holidays are not identical across India because the RBI calendar includes state and city-specific closures. A holiday applicable to a branch in one location may not apply to another branch in a different state or city.

Customers should therefore check the branch-specific holiday schedule before planning a visit, especially when the work requires physical access to bank staff or facilities.

Which Banking Services Will Be Available

A branch holiday does not shut down all banking services. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments, mobile banking, internet banking and ATM services will generally be available.

However, services requiring a physical branch may not be available on these dates. These include locker access, demand draft issuance, certain cash transactions, cheque-related branch work and account documentation.

Customers with time-sensitive branch work may therefore need to complete it before the applicable holiday, particularly when a regional closure falls close to a weekend.
