Payments made through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) are generally quick and seamless, but at times, the money gets debited from the account even when the payment fails or doesn’t reach the recipient. In such cases, the sender sees the amount deducted, but the transaction doesn’t complete properly, which can be confusing.
Sometimes, UPI payments fail to reach the receiver and this often happens due to technical or system-related issues during processing. These may include network issues, bank server downtime, and/or delays in processing between different banks involved in the transaction. At times, the receiving bank may also take some time before confirming the transaction, which leads to delay in status update.
In cases where a UPI transaction fails after the amount is debited, the refund is generally processed automatically in accordance with RBI guidelines. For most failed fund transfers, the amount is required to be refunded back within T+1 working day. In some merchant-related transactions, the process can take up to five working days depending on the bank and settlement cycle.
RBI guidelines state that banks are required to resolve failed transactions within a prescribed turnaround time. Also, if they fail to do so, they can also face penalties or regulatory action for delays beyond the allowed period.
If a payment is debited, but not received by the recipient, users should wait for around 24-48 hours, since most failed UPI transactions usually get reversed till then.
So it’s better not to try the payment again immediately, as it can create confusion or even lead to a duplicate transaction. Also, users should verify the transaction status in their bank account or UPI app history before raising complaints.
If the refund doesn’t come within this time period, the sender can raise a complaint from the UPI app or directly contact their bank’s customer support. Most UPI apps also have a “Report Issue” option in transaction history. If the issue still doesn’t resolve, you can take this matter to NPCI for further action. Keeping the transaction ID with you also helps in tracking the case and makes the process a bit faster.
