If you have received a communication regarding completing your know your customer (KYC) norm, while it is already updated, then don’t worry.
According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) KYC amendment direction, 2025, banks are required to conduct periodic KYC or re-KYC of their customers based on their profiles. It is a minimum of once every two years for high-risk customers, at least once every eight years for medium-risk customers, and at least once every 10 years for low-risk customers.
But instead of submitting all the documents again, one can simply provide the 14-digit Central KYC (CKYC) number to the bank to fetch your KYC details from the centralised repository of customers’ KYCs. Not just for re-KYC purposes, one can use the CKYC number for opening a new account with a financial entity, as well.
Before the launch of the CKYC Registry (CKYCR) in July 2016, customers had to visit financial entities, including banks, insurers, mutual fund offices, or points of presence (PoPs), and submit their physical documents everywhere to get the details updated. The process was cumbersome, involving redundant paperwork. CKYC addresses this need.
CKYCR streamlines KYC procedures. According to the CKYC website, the registry hosted more than 8,700 regulated entities and over 1,125 million KYC records. Under CKYCR, customers are assigned a 14-digit CKYC Identifier, based on the KYC details they submit.
This number is valid pan-India and is accepted across different institutions regulated by the RBI, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai), and the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). Once issued, customers can simply provide this number to financial entities to open an account instead of submitting all the paper documents again and again.
Like KYC, the CKYC holds a customer’s personal identification details, like contact number, address, etc., and official identity proof details, such as Permanent Account Number (PAN), passport, driving license, etc., provided by the customer for account set-up. The financial institutions upload these details in the repository to form a centralised database of customers’ details, which other financial institutions can also access. The CKYCR processes the uploaded data, generates a unique 14-digit CKYC Identifier, and issues it to the customer.
In case a customer misses the CKYC information or the number, it can be obtained from the financial institutions or directly through other modes.
CKYCR Portal: One can retrieve the CKYC number through the official CKYCR portal link. For this:
Visit the official CKYCR portal
Enter the mobile number mentioned in the KYC details
Enter the OTP received on the mobile
The CKYC number will be sent to your mobile number within minutes.
Missed Call Service: One can also give a missed call to the official toll-free number #7799022129 to get the CKYC details. The CKYC information will be sent via SMS to the registered mobile number in KYC.
DigiLocker: A customer can also fetch the CKYC card directly through the DigiLocker account by providing details of an identity proof, like Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, etc., and giving consent to fetch the CKYC card.
In case these modes are inconvenient, one can call or visit their bank where KYC details are updated and ask them to provide you with your 14-digit CKYC Identifier.
