The announcement, made just days before the Budget 2025, signals significant updates for government employees. While the exact timeline for setting up the commission is yet to be disclosed, Vaishnaw indicated that the process would likely begin by 2026.

Employees and pensioners in the central government have been eagerly waiting for the commission's establishment, which would pave the way for modifications to their basic salary, allowances, pensions and other benefits.

The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Commenting on the approval, Vaishnaw stated, “Our Prime Minister has given his permission for the formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission for all Central government employees.”

Vaishnaw mentioned that the government will soon appoint a chairman and two members to suggest modifications to central government employees salary, allowances, and benefits while taking into account economic situations such as inflation and other external considerations

With the existing 7th Pay Commission, introduced in 2016, is set to conclude its term on December 31, 2025, the 8th Pay Commission is anticipated to come into effect from January 1, 2026. Following the tradition of previous commissions, it is expected to revise salaries, pensions, and allowances for central government employees.

The pay commission is essential in shaping salary structures, allowances, and benefits for government employees, with its recommendations having a substantial impact on workers and pensioners nationwide.
