FASTag has made toll payments faster and reduced waiting time at toll plazas across the country. But some users have also reported issues of incorrect deductions and unexpected penalties. A recent experience shared by actor Ashwin Mushran has highlighted one such case.

According to Mushran, the incident occurred while he was travelling on Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

How The Alleged FASTag Scam Happened

Sharing the incident in a video on social media, Mushran claimed he was stopped at a toll booth on Mumbai's Sea Link and informed that the FASTag linked to the vehicle had nil balance. The actor alleged that he was subsequently charged a penalty of Rs 200 by the toll operator.

The issue came to his notice when he used the same route again later that day. According to the video, the vehicle crossed the toll plaza without any difficulty on the return journey. He also referred to a message showing that the FASTag account linked to the vehicle had a balance of around Rs 3,000 earlier that day.

He then approached the toll office to seek clarification regarding the penalty but was informed that the matter would require investigation. But he was not happy with this and went back to the same toll booth and showed the balance message to the operator who had deducted the penalty.

According to him, a supervisor later reviewed the details and the penalty was refunded. He also advised motorists to verify unexpected charges and raise the issue with toll authorities if they encounter a similar situation.

What To Do In Such Cases

He advised not to pay any penalty immediately if a FASTag balance shows nil, and instead get the issue verified through the toll office or official channels before making any payment.

In a caption along with his post, he noted that while a charge of Rs 200 may seem small, but if the same occurs at multiple places, it can balloon up to a bigger amount. He recommended regularly checking FASTag balance, taking screenshots as proof and ensuring any claim of insufficient funds is verified before paying, while also urging people to share the message for awareness. Several users also commented of similar experiences on his post.
