FASTag balance needs to be maintained for smooth toll payments, and vehicle users can use different digital platforms linked to their accounts. Sometimes payments reflect quickly, while in some cases, there can be delays or issues at toll points.

What is FASTag

FASTag is a cashless toll system used at highway toll plazas. A small electronic tag is placed on the vehicle’s windscreen and is scanned automatically at the toll gate. This tag is linked to a prepaid account, and the toll amount gets deducted when the vehicle passes through the toll plaza.

To keep it running, users can add money using different payment options available on various platforms.

FASTag Payment and Recharge Options

Vehicle owners can use various digital platforms to recharge their FASTag, depending on their preference. These options usually depend on the bank or service linked to the vehicle, but all of them are just for adding money to the FASTag account.

UPI

FASTag recharge can be done through UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM using the linked FASTag ID or payment handle for quick transactions, often processed instantly across supported banks and wallets.

NHAI Portal / MyFASTag

The official NHAI/IHMCL platform allows users to manage their FASTag account and complete recharge transactions easily through its dedicated system, with account tracking and balance view features also available online.

Bank Channels

Issuing banks also let users recharge FASTag through their mobile banking apps and net banking. Net banking can be used to handle transactions directly from the bank’s online website or portal.

Credit Cards

Credit cards can also be used for FASTag recharge. It allows instant payment, and sometimes users also get rewards or cashback depending on the bank or card they are using.

Auto-Pay Facility

Some banks and apps also offer an auto-debit option, from which recharge is automatically done when the balance goes below a set limit. This helps in keeping the balance maintained without doing manual recharge again and again.

FASTag Annual Pass Option

The FASTag Annual Pass is an optional prepaid plan for private vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans. It is activated through NHAI platforms and is valid on National Highways and Expressways. The pass covers up to one year or 200 toll crossings, whichever comes first. From April 2026, the fee is Rs 3,075. After activation, toll charges are covered under the pass instead of being deducted per trip from the FASTag wallet.

What You Should Know

FASTag is now mandatory for toll payments, and it should be active, properly stuck on the windscreen, and have enough balance when you cross toll plazas. If FASTag is not working or not available, you can still pay through UPI at the toll using QR code, but then you are charged 1.25 times the normal toll.

If payment fails because of a low balance or inactive tag, an e-notice can be issued, and the normal toll has to be paid within 72 hours. If it is delayed, the charge can go higher, sometimes double, and inactive or blacklisted tags can also cause extra penalties.

It’s better to keep some balance in FASTag and just check it from time to time using your bank or FASTag app, so you don’t face issues at tolls.
