Retirement Age: Maharashtra Gazetted Officers Urge State Govt To Raise Superannuation Age To 60

The Maharashtra State Gazetted Officers’ Federation has urged the government to increase the retirement age for state government employees from 58 to 60 years. The employees’ body has also approached Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with a formal request in this regard.

The proposal seeks to bring the state in line with the central government standard with regard to the retirement age of government employees. In a letter to Fadnavis, dated August 10, 2026, the federation pointed out that the Union government had transitioned to a 60-year retirement age in 1998, and that 25 other states have since adopted the same policy, but Maharashtra is yet to make the change.

The federation, however, praised the state government’s recent move to raise the retirement age for judicial officers in subordinate courts to 62 years, in compliance with the Supreme Court’s interim order. The federation urged the state government to extend similar benefits to the state’s general workforce, under the principle of equality as per Article 14 of the Constitution. They said that maintaining a lower retirement age for state employees while raising it for judicial officers creates an unnecessary disparity within the government service framework.

The federation also highlighted the growing crisis of staff shortage that is affecting the efficiency of the administration. It pointed out that of the 719,000 sanctioned posts within the Maharashtra government, approximately 275,000 positions, which is around 35 per cent of the total workforce, are currently vacant, according to a report by PTI. 

These vacancies are compounded annually as the number of available positions increases by 3 per cent every year due to retirements. It also expressed concerns that rather than filling these essential permanent roles through fresh recruitment, the government has relied on re-appointing the retired employees on a contractual basis to fill the vacant positions.

The Federation said that by raising the retirement age, the government would be able to retain the services of experienced officers, and at the same time, it would make a large amount of money available to the government that would otherwise have to be immediately disbursed as retirement benefits. This deferment of payouts could also provide the state with better financial flexibility.

With 25 other states and the central government already operating under the 60-year threshold, the gazetted officers in Maharashtra seek similar rules for them. The decision now rests with the state government to evaluate the merits of the request from the federation.
