EPFO E-Nomination: How Family Changes Can Change Your PF Nomination

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) provides an online facility for members to file their nominations through the member portal. The process uses Aadhaar authentication and allows members to record who should receive their PF money after their death.

Nomination is also linked to benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI). EPFO’s member portal states that filing a nomination is mandatory under the EPF Scheme, 2026.

Your Family Details Decide Who You Can Nominate

The rules are different for members who have a family and those who do not. A member with a family generally needs to nominate eligible family members covered under the EPF rules.

A married member has to provide details of the spouse and children in the family declaration. This is required even if the member does not want to give a share of the PF money to every family member.

For a member who does not have a family under the EPF rules, the nomination can be made in favour of another person. However, that nomination becomes invalid when the member later acquires a family. A fresh nomination then needs to be filed.

This is important for members who may have nominated a parent, sibling or another person before marriage. Marriage or the birth of a child can mean that the family information and nomination need to be updated.

EPS And EDLI Also Need To Be Considered

The nomination process is not limited to the PF balance. EPFO also administers EPS and EDLI, which have their own rules for family members and nominees.

For EPS, members have to provide details of their spouse and children, where applicable. A member who does not have a family can nominate one person for pension benefits, subject to the rules of the scheme.

The EPF nomination also applies to EDLI. The scheme provides an insurance benefit when an eligible member dies while in service, subject to the conditions under the scheme.

How To File EPFO E-Nomination

Members need an Aadhaar-verified UAN and a mobile number linked to Aadhaar to use the online nomination facility. After logging into the EPFO member portal, they can select “E-nomination” under the “Manage” section.

The member first needs to check the personal details shown on the portal and then enter the required family information. Details such as the Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, relationship and address are required for family members. A photograph also needs to be uploaded. If the nominee is a minor, guardian details have to be provided.

The member can then choose the nominee or nominees and assign their shares in the PF balance. If there is more than one nominee, the total allocation must add up to 100 per cent.

Aadhaar E-Sign Completes The Process

Entering the details on the portal does not complete the nomination. The member must also complete the Aadhaar-based e-sign process using the OTP sent to the mobile number linked with Aadhaar.

EPFO’s guidance states that an e-nomination without the required e-signature is not treated as complete for action after the member’s death. Members can check “Nomination History” on the portal after completing the process.

If a member wants to change the nomination later, a fresh nomination has to be filed and e-signed. The new nomination replaces the earlier one. EPFO also provides Form 2 for members who want to use the prescribed physical nomination process.
