Central government employees and pensioners are waiting for the next Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) hike. The revision is due with effect from July 1, 2026, but the Union Cabinet meeting held on October 14 did not bring an announcement.

DA is paid to central government employees to help offset the impact of inflation on their household expenses. Pensioners receive a corresponding benefit known as DR. Both are calculated as a percentage of basic salary or pension.

In April 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a 2-percentage-point increase in DA and DR, taking the rate from 58 per cent to 60 per cent, effective from January 1, 2026.

Previous July DA Hike Announcements

The Centre generally revises DA and DR twice a year, with effect from 1st January and 1st July. However, the announcement often comes after the effective date. The previous five years provide an indication of when the July instalment has been announced.

In 2025, the government announced a 3-percentage-point increase on October 1, taking the DA and DR rate from 55 per cent to 58 per cent.

In 2024, the announcement came on October 16, with a 3-percentage-point increase. In 2023, a 4-percentage-point increase was announced on October 18, taking the rate from 42 per cent to 46 per cent.

In 2022, the Union Cabinet approved a 4-percentage-point hike on September 28. In 2022, the rate increased from 34 per cent to 38 per cent. In 2021, the announcement came on October 21, with a 3-percentage-point increase from 28 per cent to 31 per cent. All five revisions took effect from 1 July of their respective years, despite the announcements coming later.

July 2026 DA Hike Announcement Timeline

The previous five years show that the July DA and DR revision was announced between September 18, and October 21. Four of these five announcements came in October, while the 2022 revision was announced in September. As of October 17, 2026, the July 2026 revision is still awaiting an official announcement.

If the Centre approves the revision, effective from July 1, 2026, eligible employees and pensioners would receive the revised benefits from that date, subject to the official terms. The government’s announcement will confirm the increase and the applicable rates.
