Bank Holidays In December 2025: Banks across the country will observe different holidays during the Christmas week, leading to bank closure for up to five days in some states. These holidays come under the calendar published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and banking services in different states will be impacted in different ways.

While some states will see banks functioning on most days, others, especially in parts of the Northeast, will witness consecutive closures due to local observances combined with Christmas and year-end holidays.

Christmas: Nationwide Bank Holiday

The only national holiday during the month of December is Christmas, which falls on December 25. All banks will be closed during this holiday.

Besides Christmas, some states will have holidays on Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas, giving an extended break in branch operations.

Northeastern States To See Back-To-Back Closures

Some Northeastern states will observe a bunch of bank holidays from December 24. On Christmas Eve, banks will be closed in Aizawl, Kohima, and Shillong.

This will be followed by another holiday on December 26, which will be observed in Aizawl, Kohima, and Shillong because of Christmas celebrations.

Banks will remain closed in Kohima due to local events on December 27. Consequently, December 30 has been declared a bank holiday in the city of Shillong as it is the death anniversary of U Кiang Nangbah. Also, banks will be closed in Aizawl and Imphal on December 31 due to New Year’s Eve and Imoinu Iratpa.

Which Services To Remain Operational

Even on bank holidays, customers can use online banking facilities. Net banking, mobile banking applications, UPI transactions, and withdrawals from ATMs will remain operational even on bank holidays.

However, services that involve branch visits will not be possible. Services such as cheque clearing, cash deposits, and withdrawals through branches, that fall under the Negotiable Instruments Act, will continue to remain suspended during bank holidays.

Bank Holidays In January 2026

The holiday calendar also extends into the year 2026. Additionally, banks are scheduled to be closed on various days in the month of January 2026. Banks will be closed on New Year’s Day, on January 1, 2026, on January 2, due to Mannam Jayanthi, and also on January 3, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Hazrat Ali. Further, Makar Sankranti is on January 14, holidays related to Pongal on January 15, and Republic Day on the 26th of January.

It is advised that customers make plans beforehand to undertake branch-dependent tasks to avoid inconvenience, especially during the festive period of bank closure.
