The State Bank of India (SBI) is investigating a suspected data breach after customer records reportedly surfaced on the Dark Web. This information consists of personal and loan-related information. The incident has raised concerns about identity theft, fraud and any new forms of targeted financial scams.

In a disclosure on October21, 2026, SBI said it has identified 3,897 customer records containing personally identifiable information (PII) among the total records reviewed. The bank has initiated its cyber incident response procedures and processed an independent agency to investigate this incident.

The exposed information includes names, mobile numbers, date of birth, email addresses, branch details, and metadata that is linked with loan applications and leads. The full extent and authenticity of the data remain under investigation.

The allegation surfaced on October 16, 2026, which drew attention to the risks that are associated with the exposure of sensitive financial and personal information. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CyberPulse56 said the dataset includes around 375,000 entries as well as 2,722 PDF documents. The files contain personal customer information, residential addresses, loan applications, account-opening forms, supporting documents, and other application-related records. If the information is genuine and contains current customer data, its exposure could create significant privacy and cybersecurity risks.

How Can SBI Customers Protect Themselves?

No notification has been issued to the people whose data has been compromised. This makes it important for all SBI customers and users to remain cautious and alert.

Customers should keep a check on their credit report. They should also look for unfamiliar loan accounts or credit enquiries. If there’s been any enquiry made or any amount has been disbursed, one should immediately report it to the bank.

One should not trust unknown callers just because they know your banking details. Further, do not share any OTPs, PINs or passwords with any caller. At the same time, do not click on unexpected links or install applications at the request of any caller.

Can Your Personal Details Be Used for Loan Fraud?

A data leak does not automatically allow criminals to obtain loans in someone else’s name. However, at the risk of any exposed information, fraudsters can impersonate customers and make fraudulent applications much more convincing while exploiting the weaknesses and doubts of customers.

“A data leak does not mean someone can walk away with a loan in your name, but it does make their job easier. Names, phone numbers and loan details help fraudsters sound like they are calling from the bank, and that is where people make the slip. So, check your credit report every few months for loans or enquiries you do not recognise. Never share an OTP or PIN with anyone, even if the caller knows your account details. If something looks off, call the lender and report it on 1930. Acting early is what protects your money and your credit score,” says Sahdev Singh Tomar, CA, and founder, Tomar & Associates, a CA firm.
