  • Users must manually remove unused accounts to avoid confusion and transaction issues.

  • Keeping only active accounts helps prevent payment failures and delayed refunds processing.

Payments by way of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) continue to grow steadily in India as more people adopt digital methods for everyday transactions. At the same time, users often move to a different bank or begin using another account for transactions due to various reasons. Even then, old bank details can still stay linked in the UPI app. Adding a new account keeps your UPI working, but it doesn’t always replace or clear the old one automatically.

UPI lets you connect multiple bank accounts to the same mobile number so they can all appear in one place. However, old accounts do not get removed automatically. If you no longer need it, you have to remove it manually from the linked accounts section.

Why Removing Old Linked Accounts Is Important

Switching banks and setting a new default account doesn’t always remove old bank accounts from the UPI app. They can still show up in the list which can become confusing when multiple accounts are linked to the same mobile number and appear together, even as transactions continue to go through the selected default account without any issue.

If that old account is no longer active, things can go wrong, such as payments failing or refunds taking time. Auto-payments linked to it can also get affected. That’s why it makes sense to keep only the accounts you actually use.

How You Can Remove Linked Accounts in UPI

You can remove a linked bank account from your UPI app through the bank account or settings section. You will find all linked accounts under the profile or account area where you can select the account and choose the remove or unlink option. After you remove an unused bank account from your UPI app, it gets unlinked and won’t be used for payments anymore. If you need it again later, you can always add it back and link it just like from the app.

Things To Remember

Review your active mandates after changing or removing a bank account to avoid payment issues. Also, check at the linked accounts from time to time and keep only the ones you use. Removing unused accounts can keep your UPI app simple and reduce chances of errors.
