Unified Payments Interface has become a widely used digital payments platform in India, with multiple applications and payment services processing transactions through the system.

Among these, WhatsApp Pay, the payments service on Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp, recorded a rise in UPI activity in July 2026. It processed 167.89 million transactions worth Rs 12,957.07 crore during the month, with its transaction volume more than doubling from 74.60 million transactions in July 2025.

WhatsApp Pay’s UPI Transactions Rise Over Five Years

WhatsApp Pay’s July transaction volume has increased every year since 2022. It processed 6.18 million transactions worth Rs 502 crore in July 2022, which rose to 17.84 million transactions worth Rs 1,598.67 crore in July 2023. The platform recorded 41.39 million transactions worth Rs 3,215.18 crore in July 2024, followed by 74.60 million transactions worth Rs 5,412.58 crore in July 2025.

WhatsApp Pay crossed the 100 million transaction mark for the first time in December 2025. In July 2025, it processed 74.60 million transactions worth Rs 5,412.58 crore, which rose to 167.89 million transactions worth Rs 12,957.07 crore in July 2026.

WhatsApp Pay Ranks 8th Among UPI Apps

WhatsApp Pay ranked eighth among UPI apps by transaction volume in July 2026. PhonePe remained the largest UPI app with 10.86 billion transactions, followed by Google Pay with 7.65 billion and Paytm with 1.90 billion. WhatsApp Pay processed more transactions than CRED and Amazon Pay, which recorded 142.10 million and 90.65 million transactions, respectively.

The platform’s UPI journey began after NPCI approved WhatsApp Pay to go live on UPI in November 2020 under a multi-bank model. NPCI removed restrictions on the number of users WhatsApp could onboard in 2024. It was initially allowed to onboard up to 20 million users, with the limit later raised to 40 million in 2021 and 100 million in 2022.

Overall, UPI recorded 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July 2026. In August, UPI recorded 10.50 billion transactions worth Rs 13.79 lakh crore as of August 16, according to NPCI data. The figures show WhatsApp Pay’s growing presence in India’s UPI ecosystem as digital payments continue to expand.
