UIDAI lists accepted documents for Aadhaar detail updates
Passport, voter ID and ration card serve multiple purposes
Document requirements vary by the type of update
Aadhaar cardholders planning to correct or update their personal details must submit valid supporting documents accepted by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The documents required depend on the information being changed, whether it is the applicant’s name, residential address, date of birth (DoB) or relationship details.
A single document may serve as proof for multiple categories, while some documents are accepted only for a specific purpose. As such, applicants should check the relevant document requirements before submitting an update request to avoid delays.
Documents For Proof Of Identity
According to the UIDAI portal, Proof of Identity (PoI) documents must contain the applicant’s name and photograph. These documents can be used to establish identity and support eligible name updates.
UIDAI accepts several documents for this purpose, including passport, ration card, Public Distribution System (PDS) photo card, voter ID, e-voter ID with details available on the Election Commission’s website, and driving licence.
Documents For Proof Of Address
For a residential address update, applicants must provide Proof of Address (PoA) containing their name and address in India.
Accepted documents include a passport, ration card, voter ID, PDS photo card, Kisan photo passbook, government-issued service identity card, pensioner identity card and domicile certificate.
Applicants may also use a bank or post office savings passbook containing the required photograph, stamp and signature. Bank account statements, credit card statements and post office savings account statements are accepted if they are not older than three months.
Documents For Proof of Relationship
Proof of Relationship (PoR) is relevant when an applicant seeks an Aadhaar update through a Head of Family (HoF). These documents establish the relationship between the applicant and the family member.
Accepted documents include passports, ration cards, birth certificates, marriage certificates, pension records, domicile certificates and educational certificates. A self-declaration by an immediate family member living at the same address may be accepted when the applicant seeks to use that family member’s address. Legal guardianship documents and specified child-protection records are also accepted in applicable cases.
Documents For Proof Of Date Of Birth
For DoB updates, UIDAI accepts passport, birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, recognised educational board or university certificates, and specified government-issued service or pensioner identity documents.
A transgender identity card or certificate is also included in the accepted list.
Applicants should verify the latest requirements on UIDAI’s official website before applying, as document eligibility may depend on the type of update and the applicant’s circumstances.
