Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Air India’s London-bound Flight Crashes Near Airport

According to some reports, the Gujarat plane crash took place shortly after its takeoff from the Ahmedabad airport. It supposedly crashed in a populated area located in Gujarat’s Meghani area.

An Air India plane crashed near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday in Gujarat’s Meghani area. The flight, bound for London, was carrying over 200 passengers at the time of crash. Videos circulating on social media show a plane burning with thick smoke engulfing the entire aircraft.

In a post on social media platform X, Air India confirmed the crash stating:

"Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest..."

The news Agency ANI has reported that there were 242 abroad on the plane.

According to some reports, the incident took place shortly after its takeoff from the Ahmedabad airport. It supposedly crashed in a populated area located around the airport.

The Air India B787 Aircraft VT-ANB, while operating flight AI-171 from (Ahmedabad to Gatwick) crashed immediately after its takeoff from Ahmedabad. There were 242 people on board the aircraft, including 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew.

The local residents immediately rushed to the spot to assist during the rescue efforts.

Reacting to this unfortunate incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that it has “stunned and saddened everyone”. "It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected," the Prime Minister stated.

The Ahmedabad airport has been temporarily closed following the Air India plane crash.

A spokesperson from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport informed that "Flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, Gatwick, earlier today, was involved in a crash shortly after takeoff, outside the airport. As a result, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport. We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation."

Following the crash of Air India Boeing Dreamliner plane, the Boeing Company has also issued an official statement is actively working to gather more information.

"We are in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171 and stand ready to support them. Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders and all affected," the company stated.
