Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed the Delhi Police to conduct a fresh survey of Delhi's senior-citizen population to strengthen a safety and security net for them. During a law-and-order review meeting on August 19, 2026, Sandhu met Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar and other senior officials to evaluate specialised community policing initiatives for senior citizens.
The LG reviewed the operational efficiency and adoption of the Senior Citizen Mobile Application, outreach drives, and how the beat-level police interaction initiatives are working. Sandhu emphasised that the safety, well-being and confidence of the elderly living in the city depend on regular periodic visits by local beat officers and robust emergency support. He also issued a directive to mandate a complete assessment of the actual number of senior citizens living in the capital. This will help in updating the data and expand the mobile application’s coverage accordingly, so that more seniors use it for prompt grievance redressal, especially those who are living alone or require support.
In short, the directive focuses on widening the reach of the police’s dedicated mobile application for the elderly to ensure their safety, proactive assistance, and quick emergency response.
In addition to the senior citizens’ safety and security, discussion was also held around securing public space for women and girl students in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. According to media reports, the meeting comprehensively evaluated the performance and ground-level deployment of specialised “Shishtachar Squads”, for women and girls. These dedicated teams are deployed strategically around educational institutions, busy transit hubs, and crowded marketplaces to prevent eve-teasing, street harassment, and enforce public order.
The LG stressed that there must be enhanced vigilance and proactive patrolling, and nil tolerance against offenders in order to create a secure public environment.
While discussing street-level policing, the safety of women on public transit was also discussed in detail. Sandhu sought an update on the dedicated deployment of security staff and police personnel inside Delhi’s Pink Buses. He said having security personnel visibly present on public transport is important to make commuters feel safe and confident. Along with the emergency response systems, these measures can help ensure safer travel for the public.
The meeting also stressed the need to maintain a zero-tolerance approach to crimes against senior citizens and women. Sandhu asked Delhi Police to remain vigilant while handling such cases with empathy.
