Budget to be tabled on February, special Parliamentary session to be held in two phases
The dates for the release of the Economic Survey for the financial year of 2025-26 have been finalised along with the presentation of the Union Budget for 2026. The Economic Survey will be released by the Finance Ministry on January 29.
The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) proposed that the Union Budget for 2026 be released on the designated date, February 1, despite falling on a Sunday. The Economic Survey, which is a precursor to the Budget, will be presented by V Anantha Nageswaran, chief economic advisor, on January 29.
The final dates for the Parliament’s Budget Session were released, and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the announcement will be made in two phases. The first phase of the Budget session will begin on January 28, a day before the Economic Survey is released. The first phase of the special Parliamentary session will conclude on February 13. This will be followed by the second phase of the Parliament session, which is scheduled to be held through March 9 and April 2, Rijiju posted on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
“On the recommendation of the Govt of India, Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji has approved the summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2026. The Session will commence on 28 January 2026 and continue till 2 April 2026,” Rijiju posted.
There was a lot of speculation in the media about the date of release of the Union Budget document, since February 1 falls on a Sunday. Since 2017, the Union Budget has been presented on February 1, even if the date fell on weekends.
This will be the ninth Union Budget to be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. There have also been questions on whether or not Sitharaman will present the Budget this year, with reports of a cabinet reshuffle after Nitin Nabin was appointed as the BJP national working president. There have been no rejig in cabinet formation since its formation in June 2024. Reports have said that a cabinet reshuffle is expected soon, though whether such a shuffle could happen before the Budget was unknown.
