Summary of this article

  • Viral video estimates a roadside Rohtang Pass Maggi seller makes huge sales.

  • Total revenue figures do not represent actual profits after accounting for expenses.

  • Social media users debated severe weather challenges, limited seasons, and true profits.

A roadside Maggi stall at Rohtang Pass has caught social media attention with estimates of its daily sales during the off-season reaching around Rs 14,000 to Rs 15,000. The figures have prompted discussion about the business and the difference between sales and actual earnings.

In a video shared on social media, content creator Harsh Chauhan speaks to the seller about his business during the off-season. Based on the quantities and prices discussed, Chauhan writes in the caption, “That means even in the OFF-SEASON, estimated daily sales come to around Rs 14,000 to Rs 15,000 per day!”

How The Maggi Seller’s Daily Sales Add Up

According to the seller, he sells around 60 to 70 plates of Maggi and approximately 200 cups of tea on a typical off-season day. At Rs 100 per plate, sales from 60 plates of Maggi would amount to Rs 6,000, while 200 cups of tea priced at Rs 40 each would generate another Rs 8,000.

The daily sales were estimated by multiplying the quantities mentioned by the seller by the prices stated in the video. This takes the estimated daily sales to Rs 14,000. If the seller sells 70 plates of Maggi, the figure can go up to Rs 15,000. The seller also mentions selling egg Maggi and other items separately. Their contribution has not been included in this calculation.

Daily Sales Do Not Represent Actual Profit

This figure indicates an estimated gross sales figure, considering the number of packs sold and their price as mentioned in the video. This does not indicate the total amount which the seller ends up earning after covering his expenses.

The video does not disclose the cost of Maggi packets, vegetables, eggs, tea, milk, gas, disposable plates and cups or other supplies. Expenses related to transporting stock to the location and other expenses would also affect the amount left after sales.

The seller’s actual profit or daily income after expenses has not been shared. The figures should therefore be understood as an estimate of daily turnover rather than confirmed earnings.

What Social Media Users Said

The video sparked a discussion about the difference between sales and profit in a small business. Some users raised the concern of whether the daily sales figures could translate into high annual profits. They pointed to the limited tourist season, days with fewer customers, breaks in business and transportation costs.

Other users highlighted the working conditions at such locations. One user pointed out that running a stall in the cold and standing for hours is not easy. Another highlighted the high cost of bringing supplies to such locations and the difficulties of working in harsh weather.
