No lockdown under consideration, government confirms
Fuel supply stable despite global uncertainties
Citizens urged to avoid spreading misinformation
Amid global tension in West Asia, there has been speculation on social media that a nationwide lockdown in India might be possible. However, the Indian government has struck down any such claims that raise concern and panic in the masses, while also calling them false and baseless. The clarification comes at a time when the rumours have misled people and created panic and frenzy. This has led to a panic-driven behaviour in some parts of the country.
The Centre has made it clear that no such proposal for a lockdown is under consideration, and people should not believe or circulate any such information without verifying it through official sources. As per a report by The Hindu, the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has also put these rumours to rest, “I want to reassure people that there shall not be any lockdown. I am surprised that some leaders are saying there will be a lockdown and there will be shortages of fuel. These are baseless. Such remarks coming from those in political domains are worrisome. There will be no lockdown, such as we saw during COVID. I want to reassure people that there shall be no such lockdown as we saw in COVID,” she said.
These rumours have also gained global attention due to a mix of global development and misinterpretations of the recent statements made by leaders. Concerns around geopolitical tensions and their potential impact on fuel supplies and other necessities for people’s daily sustenance have made people uneasy. However, the government has reassured that these challenges are being managed through policy measures and not through lockdown-like restrictions that were seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing the fuel shortage concerns, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri took to his X account, clarifying that there is no lockdown-like situation under consideration or even likely for that matter. “The global situation remains in flux, and we are closely monitoring developments across energy, supply chains, and essential commodities on a real-time basis. India has consistently demonstrated resilience in the face of global uncertainties, and we will continue to act in a timely, proactive, and coordinated manner,” said the minister.
The post has also asked the citizens to remain calm and responsible, and to refrain from being a mental victim to such rumours. Shortly after this post, he shared the government’s approach to tackling oil and fuel shortages in India. His post stated that the Government of India has decided to increase the commercial LPG allocation of states to 70%, with 20% allocation given to industries such as steel, automobile, textile and other labour-intensive industries. Furthermore, priority will be given to those industries where piped gas is not a substitute.
Responses from both ministers is a clear sign that no such situation will be implemented in India, and sharing such rumours and posts is just an irresponsible act.
