Summary of this article

  • Home insurance may not automatically cover Diwali jewellery gifts

  • Jewellery theft claims depend on valuables limits and policy conditions

  • Purchase invoices, valuation certificates and photographs help support insurance claims

  • Jewellery carried while travelling may require additional all-risk coverage

Jewellery bought or received as a Diwali gift can be valuable, but a home insurance policy may not automatically cover it in every situation. Whether the policy pays for theft depends on the cover selected, the policy’s limits and the circumstances of the loss.

Home insurance may cover the building, its contents, or both. Jewellery protection, when included, is generally part of contents or a separate valuables section. A policyholder should check these sections before assuming a new necklace or a family heirloom is insured.

Check The Policy’s Valuables Limit And Theft Conditions

“Some policies protect against burglary or housebreaking, while others offer a separate section for jewellery and valuables. Such coverage may be subject to specific sub-limits, deductibles, security conditions and requirements for declaring high-value items,” says Abhishek Bansal, CEO, insurance business, InsuranceDekho.

A sub-limit can cap the amount payable for jewellery even when the overall contents sum insured is higher. The policy may also require valuables to be kept in a locked safe. Some policies cover theft only when there is evidence of forcible entry; theft without signs of forced entry and unexplained disappearance may not be covered.

Newly bought or gifted jewellery may need to be declared if its value takes the collection above the policy’s existing limit. Depending on the policy, the item and its value may have to be listed separately. Some policies offer limited automatic cover for new valuables, subject to specified conditions and monetary limits.

Keep the original purchase invoice and, where available, a valuation certificate. Records should describe the jewellery and note its weight and purity. Photographs or videos can support a claim. For a gift, retain the giver’s purchase invoice, a gift receipt or declaration, and any available valuation certificate. These records can help establish ownership and substantiate the value claimed.

“Customers should maintain the original purchase invoice, detailed jewellery description, weight, purity and valuation certificate, wherever available. Photographs and videos of the jewellery can also serve as supporting documentation,” says Bansal.

Check Whether Cover Follows You While Travelling

“A regular home burglary or contents policy generally focuses on insured items kept at the insured premises and may not automatically extend protection to jewellery carried outside the home,” says Bansal.

Some comprehensive home policies offer a separate all-risk cover for jewellery and valuables. Depending on the policy, it may cover items worn or carried outside the insured residence, including during travel in India or abroad. The cover may include theft, robbery, or accidental loss, subject to the terms and exclusions.

Check what events are covered: accidental loss, theft, robbery, and misplacement may be treated differently. Also look for geographical limits, deductibles, exclusions and documentation requirements. If the existing policy does not cover jewellery away from home, a jewellery all-risk extension, worldwide valuables cover, or standalone jewellery policy may provide the required protection.

Before buying an add-on, confirm that its limit reflects the jewellery’s value and that it covers the places and situations in which it will be worn or carried. A home contents limit alone may not protect a valuable item outside the insured premises. Read the policy wording and ask the insurer to clarify any conditions that apply to newly acquired or gifted jewellery.
