Securing a rental home in Gurugram can turn out to be more expensive than expected with multiple upfront costs adding up even before moving in. In one account shared online, a former corporate employee has detailed how finding a 2BHK flat reportedly cost him around Rs 3.52 lakh before he could even shift.

The user has shared in a Reddit post a detailed breakdown of expenses involved in securing the flat, stating that the total cost went beyond just rent and security deposit. According to his account, multiple charges, such as brokerage, advance payments, travel for property visits and other related costs together pushed the overall amount much higher before the move-in.

Viral Post Reveals Rs 3.5 Lakh Rental Cost

The breakdown shared In the Reddit post shows multiple expenses that went into finding the flat. The user listed Rs 45,000 as brokerage, calling it 15 days rent and describing it as insane. Other costs included Rs 10,000 as token money lost in one case, Rs 4,200 spent on Uber for 15 flat visits, Rs 20,000 for lost workdays, and smaller expenses, such as food during visits and phone calls and data charges of Rs 400.

The user wrote that such expenses, along with a security deposit of Rs 1.80 lakh and first month’s rent of Rs 90,000, pushed the total cost much higher. According to the post, the overall amount spent before even moving in came to around Rs 3.52 lakh. The user described it as, “the actual cost of finding a flat in Gurgaon”, even before spending a single night in the property.

The post also highlighted the difficulties tenants face during the search process. Out of 15 brokers contacted, the user claimed that “at least 80 per cent had never actually been inside the flats they were showing”. He described issues like outdated photos, already rented listings, and said many brokers were showing properties they had not personally checked. The post also mentioned misleading information and mismatch between photos and actual conditions in some cases.

The post has also triggered wider discussion among users, with many sharing their own experiences of renting homes in major cities and the hidden costs involved in the process. One user commented, “You did not just track rent hunting costs. You tracked friction tax. And honestly the hidden cost is not brokerage. It is failed coordination.”
