Summary of this article

  • Delayed motor insurance renewal can leave vehicles without financial protection

  • No-claim bonus may reset after a 90-day policy break

  • Lapsed policies can require inspection before own-damage cover resumes

  • Compare IDV, deductibles, and add-ons instead of premium alone

Motor insurance renewal is often treated as another annual expense that can be postponed by a few days or weeks. That delay, however, can prove costly. Apart from leaving the vehicle uninsured, a break in the policy may lead to the loss of accumulated benefits and make the next purchase more cumbersome.

The concern is particularly serious in India, where a large share of vehicles on the road do not have valid insurance. Third-party cover is compulsory, but many vehicle owners allow policies to expire, especially in the two-wheeler segment. Some assume that avoiding the premium for a few months amounts to saving money. In reality, one accident during the uninsured period can create a much larger financial burden.

No-Claim Bonus May Be Lost

One of the main consequences of delayed renewal is the possible loss of the no-claim bonus, or NCB. This benefit is available on the own-damage component when no claim is made during the policy year.

The discount generally starts at 20 per cent after the first claim-free year and can rise to 50 per cent after five consecutive claim-free years. It can substantially reduce the own-damage premium at renewal.

A policyholder usually needs to renew the policy within 90 days of its expiry to retain the accumulated NCB. Once that period is crossed, the benefit may return to zero. A vehicle owner who has built up the maximum discount over several years may then have to start again from the beginning, according to a recent report by NDTV.

A Lapsed Policy Can Delay Fresh Cover

Renewing after the expiry date may also involve a vehicle inspection. The insurer may ask for photographs, a video inspection or a physical examination before offering own-damage cover. The inspection helps the insurer identify damage that may have occurred after the previous policy expired.

There is no protection during the break. If the vehicle is damaged, stolen or involved in an accident before the new policy becomes active, the insurer will not pay for the loss. The owner may also have to bear compensation arising from injury or damage caused to another person.

Compare Protection, Not Only Price

Vehicle owners should begin reviewing their cover before the renewal date rather than waiting until the last day. The insured declared value, deductibles and add-ons should be checked along with the premium.

Zero-depreciation cover, engine protection, roadside assistance and return-to-invoice cover may be useful depending on the vehicle’s age, usage and location. If the vehicle is used in a city that often gets waterlogged, engine protection may be worth considering. Roadside assistance can also come in handy on long highway drives.

Choosing a policy only because it has the lowest premium can prove costly. Renewing on time and keeping the right cover can help protect both your NCB and your finances.
