The government has announced a bonus for India's defence personnel, adding a festive cheer ahead of Diwali 2025. The Ministry of Defence confirms that the junior commissioned officers, other ranks, and agniveers who are serving in the army, navy, and the air force will receive an ad-hoc bonus, which is a non-productivity-linked sum given as a bonus, for the FY 2024-25. To ensure that the officers receive the payments before the festivities start, the Finance Ministry has ordered that the bonuses be distributed on September 29, 2025.
This non-productivity linked bonus is often referred to as an ad-hoc bonus that is a fixed annual reward granted to the employees under the central government as a fixed annual reward. This is not covered by productivity-linked schemes. Unlike the productivity-linked schemes, the ad-hoc bonus is a goodwill gesture that acknowledges the service rather than the exceptional efforts made by the officers on performance metrics.
This bonus is a sign of recognition of the contributions made by the officer is rightfully rewarded. Especially around the time of festivities, when they are away from their families and loved ones.
As per the orders from the Finance Ministry, the bonus for the year 2024-25 is the sum of 30 days ' salary. The Defence Ministry further confirmed that the same criteria will apply to JCOs, ORs, and Agniveers.
Though this comes with a catch, there is an eligibility criterion that is restricted to those who were in service from March 31, 2025, and have completed at least six months of service during 2024-25. Officers with less than a year but more than six months of service will receive the bonus on a pro-rata basis, calculated as per their duration served.
This annual tradition of granting a bonus to defence personnel is a constant gesture of gratitude and encouragement for officers who are constantly serving the nation with all their might. For soldiers and officers who are stationed away from their homes during the time of festivities, this announcement served as a financial relief as well as a moral support. This move reinforced the efforts the government makes to show recognition for their dedication, resilience, and commitment.
